The Rawson Rugby competition commenced on Monday 9 May with Andrew’s recording a four tries to one victory over an impressively obdurate Wesley team.
Tries to Ed Murphy (2), Louie Taylor and Tom Heslop, and a conversion and penalty goal to Ben Cannon saw St Andrew’s lead 25 points to 7 at the 60 minute mark. The final 20 minutes was a classic period of Rawson Rugby, where two tiring teams fought for the upper hand. Andrew’s outstanding defence, which had cracked only once in conceding an early intercept try, held firm, and the Heavies finished strongly to win 25 - 7.
In the earlier match, St John’s surprised St Paul’s to win 29 points to 5.
St Andrew’s will now play St Paul’s in Round 2, scheduled for Tuesday 17 May.
