Rosebowl Netball Report

10 April 2012

Last week, St Andrews College were the hosts to the Intercollegiate Netball; the first sport of the Rosebowl Cup. Having won the competition for the last three years the team felt pressure to uphold the winning streak.

With many seniors leaving the team last year, the netball team took on a new face in 2012. Trying many different combinations our campaign began in great style beating Sancta Sophia 43-20. The following night proved a much tougher game against Wesley College. Confidence beaming from the night before the girls stepped onto the court to find a hard hitting and accurate Wesley attack, backed with a solid defence. At half time with Andrews only up 14-10 the girls had to dig deep. The second half of the game saw Andrews run away with the win guiding the ball at our own pace and performing our plays to perfection securing the win 32-23.

St Andrews playing St Johns College has always been a good competition and the netball this year was no exception. St Johns have been building their netball team for numerous years and were always going to come out strong. This proved very true. At half-time Andrews were down 8-15 with St John’s looking dominant throughout the court. During the third quarter the Andrew’s women pulled back to be within 4 points due to smart court- work and accurate shooting. However, the St John’s lead grew to a staggering 10 heading into the fourth quarter.  Much to the Drew’s women’s ticker and fortitude to pull this back, Johns proved too dominant and took out the win.

The following match against Women’s proved crucial to the Andrews women in order to secure 2nd place. The girls didn’t take this lightly and wiped Women’s College off the court with impeccable footwork and stylish court work. Thus proving both to the college and to themselves that they were a very capable team and will be back to bring it to St John’s in 2013.

Many thanks need to be said for Coach Sophie Holdstock (fr2009) whose persistence and immense knowledge of the game assisted the girls to a courageous 2nd place overall.
