Hester completed her schooling in Manly Vale and moved to Newcastle to study medicine at the University of Newcastle. After completing her degree with honours she was awarded the Doris Smith Scholarship and a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study singing in London. Following this she returned to Australia and completed post graduate vocal training at the Griffith University in Brisbane. She was awarded the McDonald’s Aria competition and returned to London to continue her vocal studies with renowned teacher Janice Chapman. Throughout this time Hester continued her medical training in general practice, sexual health, alcohol and other drugs and working with marginalised groups. She completed the Fellowship for the Royal Australian College of General Practice on her return to Australia. She was admitted to the Royal Australian College of Physician’s Chapter of Addiction Medicine in late 2003.
She completed a Masters in Mental Health through the Institute of Psychiatry in 2013. She is currently involved in reviewing and writing clinical guidelines for the management of drugs of dependence and guidelines for the management of victims of sexual assault in the primary care setting with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
Hester is a staff specialist in Addiction at the Langton Centre, South East Sydney Local Health District and the Sydney Supervised Injecting Centre in Kings Cross and works in private general practice in Newtown. She is the chair of the GPSI in addiction for the NSW/ACT faculty of the RACGP and on the executive for the ACI pain network and is a Clinical Associate of the Central Medical School at the University of Sydney. She trains general practitioners and other health professionals in the areas of alcohol and other drugs, mental health and sexual health. She has a particular interest in working with clients with a dual diagnosis of mental health issues and addiction.
She has performed on the concert platform and in many operas both here in Australia and in the UK. Roles include Gilda from ‘Rigoletto’, the title role in ‘Anna Bolena’, Mrs Jessel in ‘The Turn of the Screw’, Laetitia in ‘The Old Maid and the Thief’, Baba in ‘The Medium’, Lucy in ‘The Telephone’ and Dido in ‘Dido and Aeneas’. She recently finished a contract with Hunter Opera singing the role of the Countess in Mozart’s ‘The Marriage of Figaro’.
