Last week, Our Dean of Students and Accomplished Soprano Jessica Harper performed with the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra and was awarded runner-up of the 92nd Annual Herald Sun Aria Awards in Melbourne.
Jessica first impressed audiences during the preliminary heats and semi-finals in September, becoming one of 5 finalists. Jessica then had had six weeks to prepare for the Final.
“I was very privileged to sing under the baton of Maestro Richard Mills, accompanied by the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra.” Jessica beamed, “My arias were ‘Come in quest’ ora bruna’ from Simon Boccanegra, and ‘Nun eilt herbei’ from Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor. It was one of the greatest and most thrilling experiences of my life.”
The prize packet for the runner up is an $8,000 scholarship to be spent on vocal tuition either in Australia or overseas and $6,000 cash. Jessica says she’ll use the money to continue studying languages, and ultimately to move to Europe.
Next month, Jessica will be performing the role of Lisa in the Operantics production of the well-loved Bel Canto opera by Bellini at the Q Theatre in Penrith. Tickets are available here.
