The Sony Foundation St Andrew’s College Children’s Camp is a not-for-profit initiative that aims to provide children with disabilities the opportunity to experience new activities and build friendships while providing respite for families. After a semester of planning, the 2015 camp took place last weekend with 18 campers and was a fantastic four days for all those involved. The atmosphere and synergy throughout the camp was full of happiness and positivity and I cannot commend all the volunteers enough for their commitment and passion to the cause.
Day 1 – we welcomed the campers with an inflatable slip and slide, a petting zoo, cricket and a magician. There was something for everyone!
Day 2 – we travelled to Manly and enjoyed a glorious morning of sailing and swimming at the beach followed by drumming back at St Andrew’s and an all-time favorite showing of ‘Finding Nemo’.
Day 3 – we ran Special Olympics and cookie decorating before a fun-filled trip to Cook and Phillip Aquatic Centre in the afternoon. A dance class before dinner gave everyone some moves for the disco that was another hit! On our final day of camp, we had a jumping castle and a fire truck display before parents joined us for lunch in the Dining Hall, along with a much-anticipated visit from Santa.
The experience was both challenging and rewarding for the volunteers and the memories made will stay with us for a lifetime. The camp is truly something special and I hope that SSACCC will continue to grow in the years to come. Thank you to the 2015 committee who made everything happen, all those who supported our fundraiser ‘Sip for Sony’, the remarkable nurses, night settlers, volunteers from Blowfly Cricket and Sailability and a big thank you to St Andrew’s College for hosting the Sony Foundation Camp again this year.
