Intercol Sports Dinner Celebrates Success

November 3, 2014

On Friday 24 October, members of the intercollegiate community gathered at Sancta Sophia College to celebrate the year in sport. The event stands to recognise the colleges and individuals who have had success across the year. Having won the treble of the Rawson, Rosebowl and University Cups, St Andrew’s College certainly was in the thick of the awards.

Our College’s sporting teams won 5 of the 8 Rosebowl sports, and 5 of the 8 Rawson sports in 2014. Certainly within those successful campaigns were individuals who had contributed in outstanding ways.

The ‘Most Valuable Player’ award for each sport across the whole competition was decided by the Intercol Committee. It was somewhat disappointing to see only three Androvians recognised across the sixteen sports – ten of which Drew’s won. Nonetheless, congratulations to the following Andrew’s students:

–          Harry Foxton for his pivotal contribution to a winning St Andrew’s boat

–          Alicia Caldwell for her incredible performance in winning all her events in Swimming

–          Sophie Payten for her leadership and match-winning performances in Soccer

After a speech from prolific writer and Wesleyan Peter Fitzsimons about seizing the College years – as they don’t come again – the final awards of the night were presented.

Andrew’s man Angus Trenerry was awarded Convenor of the Year for his efforts convening the Rawson and Rosebowl Rowing.

The prestigious Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year were also highly anticipated categories. Alex Shaw was an Andrew’s nominee for his commitment to three Rawson sports. In 2014, he captained the Soccer and Cricket teams with standout performances. Christina Grun was the Rosebowl nominee for her consistently astonishing performances in Soccer, Tennis, and Athletics – despite an injury plagued season. Unfortunately Alex missed out on the Sportsman award, but Chrissie was awarded the Intercol Sportswoman of the Year. This is the second time Chrissie has received this award, after her first win in her fResher year. It is an incredible achievement, and very well-deserved.

Congratulations to all Andrew’s men and women who have contributed to an extremely successful year of Intercol Sport. We have brought the Rosebowl and Rawson Cups back home once more!
