Artist in Residence Program

Applications Now Open For 2023

The St Andrew’s Artist in Residence Program offers one artist every year a residency opportunity to explore your practice within and alongside our community, and experience life in the College setting. St Andrew’s College is a residential College within the grounds of the University of Sydney. Home to approximately 400 university students from all disciplines and backgrounds, the College is more than a living space; it offers a comprehensive tutoring program, an extensive creative arts program, pastoral care and many opportunities for intellectual and creative exchange.

We offer residency at St Andrew’s College for a period of 40 weeks (20 February – 27 November 2023). The residency offers a double bedroom with ensuite, shared kitchenette and laundry, as well as full access to College facilities and programs. These include communal dining with three meals per day (while the kitchen is open), practice rooms, performances spaces, shared study spaces, a gym, oval and tennis courts. Please note parking and private self-contained studio/workshop space is not available. The residency is only available to one person.

Requirements

Artists in Residence are expected to be strongly involved in our community, as well as having time to focus on your own practice. There are three main requirements for the residency:

  1. create a new body of work (e.g. a major performance/series of performances, new creative work, or research presentation)
  2. engage with and contribute to the residential college community (e.g. hold workshops, give presentations, provide coaching)
  3. curate a community engagement program which connects the College with the wider community (e.g. perform at local hospitals or for local not-for-profits; invite non-College members to witness/engage with you work; mentoring).

Applications are open to artists from all genres, including but not limited to: ceramics, dance, filmmaking, literature, music, new media, performing arts, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textile art, theatre and visual art. While this residency is open to all practising artists, it generally suits emerging artists and recent graduates, especially those seeking to live away from home for the first time, or artists who are visiting Sydney for an extended period to work on a particular project. Artists from all disciplines are welcome to apply, although we are particularly interested in disciplines not yet represented in the program (disciplines of previous recipients include music and conceptual art).

Application

Applications close 1pm Friday 27 January 2023.
