It was wonderful to welcome Joe Schmidt, Head Coach of the Wallabies, to St Andrew’s College for a breakfast conversation on leadership, teamwork and high performance as part of our Sports for Leadership program this May. Hosted by our own Beau Morrison (Fr 2024), a member of the Australian Rugby 7s squad, it was a fantastic event for our College community.
Over breakfast in the Junior Common Room, Joe spoke candidly and inspiringly about leading teams, achieving high performance, and about his own remarkable career. With his characteristic thoughtfulness and insight Joe shared his views on leadership in rugby and beyond.
Joe shared insights from his coaching career across international rugby, speaking candidly about the importance of supporting people, building culture, and leading under pressure.
His message about “support people, not just coaching players” as well as his engaging discussion of team culture and decision-making in high-pressure environments resonated strongly within our community and offered a new perspective on professional life and leadership. Overall, the morning gave our student athletes and leaders plenty to reflect on – both on and off the field. It was a memorable opportunity to learn from one of the best.
The event was part of our ongoing Sports for Leadership series, where students hear from leading figures in the world of sport about lessons in high performance that transcend sport and help to prepare them for whatever lies ahead in their careers and their lives.
