Digby Cooke (fr 2019) was elected to be Senior Student of St Andrew’s College in 2021.
Here, he shares some thoughts about the year ahead:
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Business
What you are most looking forward to in 2021 at College: 2021 is going to be a huge year. Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, we missed out on numerous events that everyone loves on the Andrew’s calendar, which makes me very excited for what the year ahead will look like. For me personally, I am excited to welcome a new group of freshers to College and watch them dive into and enjoy a new and special experience. As well, for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years – I look forward to watching them continue to relish every aspect of College life which is something that is truly special to each individual.
What you hope to achieve in your Senior Student role in 2021: There is so much that the 2021 House Committee hope to achieve in continuing the great traditions of the College. As we are all unsure of the lingering impacts of COVID-19, I am committed to doing whatever it takes to make sure that every member of the Students’ Club gets to be a part of the events that were missed as well as to continue to develop the College’s positive atmosphere whilst navigating these times of change. Whether it’s retaining the 4 College Cups, or making every event on the calendar one to remember, the 2021 House Committee will be working very hard to ensure it all happens.
Advice for 2021 freshers: My advice is exactly the same advice that I (and no doubt the rest of the College) received before their respective fresher years. As you all meet each other on the first day, it will be intimidating at first but I’m sure the new friends that you make will stick with you for many years to come. Whether you’re fresh out of school, returned gap-year student, or someone who is looking for something different, the year will flash by and will be over before you know it. As you participate in your degrees at university and every aspect of College life, take the most out of every opportunity and experience that St Andrew’s gives you, because I guarantee the memories you gain will never leave you.
