After many hours on court training in the lead up to the 2018 Rosebowl Tennis campaign, the St Andrew’s squad was well prepared and eagerly awaited our first game against Sancta Sophia. Due to wet weather for the few days prior to the tournament commencing, all games were relocated from the grass courts at Manning to the Astro-Turf courts at SUSAC. Following this the team was forced to make some last-minute changes as unfortunately, Alex Raine became indisposed prior to the commencement. Nonetheless, Charlotte Johnson, Harriet Naismith, Alix Leighton and myself, Amy Preston, played doubles and singles, and won all the matches in straight sets.
Our next game was against Wesley and we knew going into the round that they had a strong 2018 roster and the games would likely be down to the hairsbreadth. Alex R and Charlotte, and Alix L and I played some excellent tennis and won the doubles matches first. The singles proved a little trickier with Alix L narrowly losing her singles, fortunately Charlotte Johnson and Alex R pulled through with good wins in their singles and Drew’s beat out Wesley four games to one.
Returning to the grass courts at Manning for our third round, we were up against John’s. The doubles matches were close but both pairs pulled through with wins. Alix L and I played well in our singles matches to get us to the four required wins which resulted in a four games to love win over John’s.
The much-anticipated final round was against the Women’s College. Alex R and Charlotte won their doubles match convincingly but unfortunately Alix L and I narrowly lost our doubles matches. Charlotte and Alex R both won their singles matches comfortably and with only one more required win, Alix L had a spectacular game and came away with a win in the tiebreaker, resulting in our overall victory!
