On 21 November 5 staff and 22 students of St Andrew’s College attended a half day ‘Allies’ training. Led by Shai Feniger from Pride in Diversity, the 3 hour session covered LGBTIQ issues and was directed at staff and students who have a genuine interest in supporting and further developing the College’s Diverse Culture. The session provided the 27 participants with an understanding of what it means to be an ally and the role that allies play in influencing cultural change within College. The session explored the fluidity of terminology, unique challenges faced by LGBTI people, the impact that an inclusive culture has on the lived experiences of LGBTI identifying people, and the role of allies through identity development. Providing allies with the foundational knowledge, skills and experience needed to continue the conversation and become an effective ally for LGBTI peers. College sees this session as part of an ongoing conversation within our community to ensure that we are inclusive of all gender and sexuality diverse people within College and create a safe space for all in our community.
